Tdap requirement for all incoming 7th graders.

All students entering 7th grade will need proof of having received a Tdap booster shot before starting 7th grade. By law, students who do not have proof of receiving a Tdap booster on or after their 7th birthday will not be able to start school.

We want to make sure your child starts school on time. In the past, doctor's offices ran out of the Tdap vaccine, so get our child's Tdap immunization now! Please bring a copy or send an email of your child's immunization record to the health office at: lkiester@tvusd.k12.ca.us by June 9th, to prevent your child's schedule from being delayed.

Please see the attached letter from the District Office regarding the immunization requirement for all incoming 7th graders.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 951-699-0080 ext. 2606.

Open Enrollment for TVUSD Intra-District Transfers ends 12/21/12!

TVUSD’s Open Enrollment policy allows parents who live within the District’s boundaries to choose their child’s school of attendance by submitting an Intra-District transfer request. Space availability is the major determining factor for approval.

All transfers received within the Open Enrollment period (Oct. 8-Dec. 21) will receive equal consideration regardless of the date they are turned in. Only transfers received during this time period will be considered as “Open Enrollment” transfers. If the number of transfers exceeds the number of spaces available at the school of choice, a lottery will be held.  Additional information regarding Intra-District transfers is available on the TVUSD homepage.

Effective February 1, 2012, we will no longer hold "P.E. Absence Make-Up Days" on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am.

If you have any questions regarding your child's progress in his/her P.E. class, check online grades first and then contact his/her P.E. teacher directly.

GOT TDAP? REGISTRATION /TDAP REQUIREMENT FOR JULY 1ST, 2011

2011 PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH) IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS.

Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread. Several infant deaths have occurred in California during 2010. Assembly bill 354, now chaptered into California law, requires students to be immunized against pertussis.

For the 2011 - 2012 school year only, all students entering 7th through 12th grades will need proof of a Dtap/Tdap/DTP booster shot before starting school. This requirement:

  • Begins July 1, 2011
  • Will be met by receiving one dose of Dtap/Tdap/DTP vaccine on or after the 7th birthday
  • Applies to all public and private schools.
  • Does not affect students enrolled in summer school.

Please bring in your updated shot records with your registration papers for next year. Registration will be delayed if the Pertussis requirement is not met. Registration is due by May 13th.

Beginning July 1, 2012, and beyond, all students entering the 7th grade will need proof of a Dtap/Tdap/DTP booster shot before starting school.

For those parents who choose not to have their child immunized, please come to the health office at your school and sign a waiver.  If you have a waiver on file for previous immunizations, please be advised that this does not include the waiver for this current Tdap booster, and you will need to sign a new waiver.

For more information log onto the district website at www.tvusd.k12.ca.us or the California Department of Health website at www.cdph.ca.gov/HealthInfo/discond/Pages/Pertussis.aspx

District Looks at Arts Education Plan

TEMECULA: District looks at arts education plan

Goal is for every student to participate in art

By CRAIG SHULTZ - cshultz@californian.com | Posted: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 9:53 pm

Some educators are noticing that the more schools are concentrating on reading, writing and arithmetic these days, the less time is spent studying the arts.

That could be about to change in the Temecula Valley Unified School District.

Four teachers presented an arts education plan to the governing board Tuesday night with hopes that every student in the district will be exposed to visual and performing arts.

The ultimate goal is to teach art to every child in kindergarten through 12th grade every day, said Jodi McClay, assistant superintendent of educational services.

McClay said she realizes the district doesn't have money to roll out the entire plan, but that many things can be done for free.

"We'll be starting very quickly on a volunteer basis," McClay said, adding the program will have three prongs: helping teachers who already teach art, encouraging middle school teachers to work with art teachers and educating elementary teachers who don't have any background in arts.

Committee member Robyn MacNair, a visual and performing arts teacher at Gardner Middle School, said arts have slowly disappeared from schools because of budget cuts and an emphasis on state testing, which focus primarily on math, science, English and social studies.

There are no longer art and music teachers in Temecula elementary schools, something that would change under the plan..

"We have been subtracting arts for budgetary reasons," MacNair said. "(Students) can learn through the arts, yet we're taking them away."

The plan calls for a comprehensive arts program at every school in the district.

"Arts need an equal place at the table of curriculum," MacNair said. "We are not meeting our students' needs if we take it away from them."

MacNair was joined at the board meeting by fellow committee members Jim Taylor, a visual and performing arts teacher at Chaparral High; Lisa Lozosky, a second-grade teacher at Tony Tobin Elementary; and Michelle Dolias, a kindergarten teacher at LaVorgna Elementary.

They have been meeting monthly since January as part of a 30-member group of teachers, parents, administrators and community representatives working to create a strategic plan for the arts in Temecula schools.

Its aim was to map out a plan to provide a comprehensive arts education program for all students in the district that would include the establishment of the arts as part of a well-rounded curriculum, educate parents, teachers and administrators about the importance of arts education and foster skills to better prepare students for higher-level education and to be successful in today's global society.

They know it will be expensive to implement the program and are hoping grants and community contributions will cover some of the costs.

Tuesday's presentation was for information only. The plan is expected to go before the school board for approval at its next meeting Nov. 9.

Call staff writer Craig Shultz at 951-676-4315, ext. 2625.

Library Newsletter - Fall 2010

Library Newsletter

Book Fair

We just had a great book fair! We had our best sales in over a year, selling over $4,000 in books and miscellaneous items. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and parents who supported our fair. I took the profit in books so that I could have 50% of the total sales. I already have students asking when the books will be on the shelves. Thanks again!

Public Library books

Also, a reminder about the program through the public library. If you would like your student to receive public library books without leaving home, sign them up for the service at the public library, and the books will be delivered here. You have to sign a consent form, and I will not be able to censor any choices that the students make. Once a book is ordered, it takes about a week for us to receive it. The student needs to bring their public library card to me, and I will check the title(s) out to them with the due date starting the day they check out the book, not when it was sent here. They will still have two weeks to read or renew the title, and we cannot accept any fines.

Books over breaks

Over the Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, students will be able to check out 4 books. As always, this is as long as they have no overdue books.

OPEN ENROLLMENT – INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFERS 2011/2012 School Year

PRESS RELEASE

OPEN ENROLLMENT – INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFERS
2011/2012 SCHOOL YEAR

The Temecula Valley Unified School District has a policy in place that allows parents who live within the District’s boundaries to choose their child’s school of attendance (Open Enrollment).  Space availability will be the major determining factor for approval.  A lottery will be held if the number of transfer requests exceeds the number of spaces available at the school of choice.  Children presently on an Intra-district transfer will automatically be renewed to the current transfer school for the 2011/2012 school year, unless the transfer is cancelled by the parent or if space availability is an issue at the transfer site (notice of a space issue would be mailed prior to May 6, 2011).

Parents of promoting 5th AND 8th graders wanting their child to attend a middle or high school other than their designated school of residence, will need to apply for a new transfer.  Promoting students matriculate to the next school based on their residence address, not the last school of attendance.

Only transfers received during the Open Enrollment time period listed below will be considered as “Open Enrollment” transfers.

11/04/10 – 1/07/11    Open Enrollment period.  New Intra-district transfers to be considered for the 2011/2012 school year.  All transfers received during the Open Enrollment period receive equal consideration regardless of date received.  A lottery will be held if the number of transfers exceeds the number of spaces available at the school of choice.

1/07/11    Closing date for transfer priority consideration.  Transfer requests received after the closing date will not be considered for Open Enrollment and will be considered on a case-by-case basis at a later date.

By 5/6/11    Parents will be notified by mail of their transfer status.
It is requested parents do not call the C.W.A. office to check the status of a transfer request, as that delays the ability to process and mail transfer notices.  Renewal transfers WILL NOT receive any notification unless the transfer will not be renewed.

Intra-district Transfer Request forms may be obtained on the District website (www.tvusd.k12.ca.us), or at the District Office located at 31350 Rancho Vista Road, in the Child Welfare and Attendance office, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Completed forms must be returned to the Child Welfare and Attendance Office for final review according to the schedule.  Completed Intradistrict Transfer forms may be faxed to (951) 676-6701.

For questions regarding this process, please call the Child Welfare and Attendance Office at (951) 506-7982.

GMS HOLIDAY CAN DRIVE

GMS HOLIDAY CAN DRIVE

The Rotary Club of Temecula needs your help. Yearly, the Rotary Club feeds hundreds of families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Funds are short and they are in need of our help.

The Rotary Club will donate the turkey, stuffing, and bread to families who are in need and is asking for schools to help with items such as canned vetgetables, sweet potatoes and canned fruit.  If you can donate one can per student, they will be able to assist many families during the holiday season this year. Please bring your can to the front office by November 12th.

Any help, big or small, will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Theater Workshops announced

Please see the attached flyer for the upcoming production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”  Last year, several sites included this information in their e-newsletters and the response from those schools was great.

I have the opportunity to arrange for the workshops as I did last year with the spring break day care. I have included the link to the available workshops.  http://www.mctinc.org/administrator/components/com_pip/files/c9/1867.doc

GMS student in concert Sunday February 21st

Stephanie Basurto is a student at Gardner Middle School and there will be a fundraiser for her hosted by the Musicians Workshop/Temecula Valley Cultural Arts Music Center on February 21st to raise money to send her to Tennessee for an International Competition.  She has been asked to represent the West Coast Country Music Association at this competition.  We would like to sell out for this event, so I am using all my resources to get the word out so that the fundraiser show can sell out.  She is always performing for other fundraiser events to help local charities and so I would love for hers to be a success!!

Thanks,

Patti Basurto
